Apple Pay in the Philippines?

Apple pay in the Philippines? Fantastic.

But when the next million merchants are using QR code transactions for cash-out costing 3% for their shoppers, 15-20 times more than for accepting payments for goods, one needs to pause and reflect.

Contactless, QR codes, swipe, dip are channels. They don’t majorly impact the economics of a payment instrument inherently.

But when faced with a 2.5% or higher MDR on domestic credit and debit, mass market merchants will regress to cash.

Either find lower cost rails linked to contactless at POS, or let the QR PH MDR settle at 0.8% to 1%.

Else, the next million merchants will either continue using cash, or at most, use their proprietary personal wallet accounts for closed loop QR code payments in a person to person mode.
